How can I make my electric guitar sound like a rhythm guitar?

So, I have a Fender Starcaster. Its electric but I cant figure out how
to make it sound like a rhythm guitar. I want to have long note that
hum through my amp, not doing solo's and crap like that. I really
dont want to spend a fortune on a distort pedal but I will if I have
to. Tell me what I need to do.
